Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), A Near Surface Inspection Technique

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is the inspection process designed to detect surface and near subsurface discontinuities of ferromagnetic materials. This method is very useful and wildly used in many applications such as welded fabrications, casting, and more.

Magnetic Particle Testing Processes

For this process, the inspected area is magnetized by the use of yoke then ferromagnetic particles are applied. If the discontinuities are found, the line of magnetic particles will be seen around the defects.

Advantages of Magnetic Particle Testing Method

  • Can detect both surface and near sub-surface defects

  • Can detect very small defects

  • Fast process with immediate results

  • Indications are visible directly on the part surface

  • Can inspect parts with complex shapes

Limitations of Magnetic Particle Testing Method

  • Parts inspected need to be ferromagnetic

  • Some parts need to be demagnetized after the inspection
